Hewlett-Packard and other makers of corporate laptops, including Dell Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd., are trying to entice buyers by adding more consumer-friendly features, such as better sound and screens and backlit keyboards.
Businesses have shown interest in computers with more consumer features, as long as they offer ways to secure important information, Hockey said.
“We think the wave is coming,” he said.
Oracle Accuses HP of False Advertising in Revised Itanium Suit
Dec. 3 (Bloomberg) — Oracle Corp., accussing Hewlett- Packard Co. of false advertising in a revised countersuit, said HP secretly paid Intel Corp. to continue producing the Itanium computer chip.
OrSacle claims HP “made false and deceptive Compaq 8500 battery statements” to Oracle and the public regarding the future of the chip to induce Oracle to continue to build software that runs on HP servers that use the Itanium chip, according to an amended complaint provided by Deborah Hellinger, an Oracle spokeswoman. Filing of the document couldn’t be immediately confirmed through electronic state court records yesterday.
HP and Intel had an Itanium collaboration agreement under which Intel would prolong HP Probook 4520S battery Itanium instead of discontinuing the chip, according to the complaint.
The agreement was kept secret until Oracle uncovered it in a lawsuit first filed by HP against Oracle in June. HP alleged then that Oracle used “strong arm tactics” to force customers to shift away from HP’s Itanium server hardware to Oracle’s own server hardware.
Details of the Itanium agreement, such as the date it was signed and how much HP paid Intel, are blacked out of the document. Oracle,Canon BP-945 battery based in Redwood City, California, seeks to rescind an agreement that settled litigation over Oracle’s hiring of former HP chief executive officer Mark Hurd as well as unspecified damages.
“Oracle is in breach of its contractual commitments to HP, and it has failed to honor its promises to customers,” Michael Thacker, a spokesman for Palo Alto, California-based HP, said yesterday in an e-mailed statement responding to Oracle’s new claims. “Oracle should be addressing and rectifying this conduct rather than making up claims against HP.”
Why HP Should Shelve Android Tablet Plans
Android needs time to mature, and since Hewlett-Packard bought Palm and its webOS platform, HP doesn’t need Android to expand in mobile devices
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) has postponed plans for an Android tablet device that was expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of this year, says AllThingsD. This marks the second potential shift for HP’s 2010 tablet plans as the HP Slate running Windows 7 that previewed center-stage at Microsoft’s Canon BP-522 battery Consumer Electronics Show in January hasn’t been mentioned much by HP since. While many in tech circles are waiting to see a flood of Android tablets to combat Apple’s successful iPad, HP—and others—have at least two reasons to hold off on such a device.
As little as three months ago, HP had few operating system choices to power a tablet, and none offered the company complete control over both the hardware and software, a key strength that Apple leverages.Acer Aspire 6920G battery HP could use Microsoft Windows 7, which as a desktop platform is overkill for a consumer tablet, or it could join the Android army and, like so many other hardware manufacturers, use Google’s platform. But in April, HP proceeded to purchase Palm for $1.2 billion, and with it the efficient webOS platform.
The Apple-like control of hardware, 
software, and ecosystem HP gains from webOS isn’t lost on the hardware company. After the Palm deal was announced, Brian Humphries, senior vice-president for corporate strategy and development at HP, noted this in a GigaOM interview:
“Ultimately, the Palm webOS and Apple are the two that can scale best over multiple devices, and we are going to compete with Apple … in the broader mobile category.”
Don’t Underestimate Google
While I don’t completely agree with Humphries—it’s a mistake to overlook Google in this market—it’s evident that HP is staking its mobile future HP Probook 4520S battery on the Palm deal. As a result, HP has no need to create an Android tablet in the near future. Instead, the company can devote resources to extending webOS beyond the small screen of a smartphone, and if it doesn’t work out, Android can be used down the road.
Another key reason HP is right to forget an Android tablet this year applies to other manufacturers as well. Simply put: No Android tablet created right now is going to be a success because of Android itself. Even the latest release of Android, version 2.2 (aka Froyo) is too limited for a tablet device. That’s great for a 4.3-inch device such as the Motorola Droid X that launches today, but not for any tablet in the 6-to-10-inch range.
Even worse, Google still limits Android market access to devices that meet certain hardware requirements, and most tablets currently don’t meet those requirements. As the iPad has shown, a useful tablet can’t just have a good browser or e-mail client. It needs a thriving developer community and access to a wide range of software applications. For an Android tablet to succeed—whether it’s built by HP or someone else—Android still needs time to mature. The operating system is great for a smartphone, but that doesn’t mean it’s great for a tablet just yet.
Dell: No Relief in Sight
Dell’s first-quarter sales and profit were down, with a grim outlook on the PC market. But with $10 billion in cash, it could ramp up its M&A
Dell dispensed a dose of reality to investors who hoped tech’s worst days were over. The computer maker said May 28 that first-quarter earnings tumbled 63%, and sales dropped 23%. On the heels of a tepid sales forecast from rival Hewlett-Packard last week, Dell’s report showed that corporations shied away from buying computers in recent months and that they’re holding off on placing new orders.
“We’re seeing a big deferral of purchases among corporations,” Dell CEO Michael 
Dell said on a conference call discussing results for the period that ended May 1. It was the second straight quarter of big profit declines at Dell, whose net income dropped 48% in the period that ended Jan. 30. Worse, the company doesn’t see prospects for improvement. “We don’t believe there’s enough momentum to call a bottom yet,” added Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden.
Investors pushed shares of Dell (DELL) higher in extended trading, partly on the hope that companies will Dell Inspiron N5010 battery replace their aging fleets of PCs next year after Microsoft (MSFT) introduces its Windows 7 operating system, the successor to its poorly received Windows Vista software, which many companies skipped buying.
Mixed Signals
Shares of Dell have risen almost 35% in the past three months. Wall Street is getting mixed signals 
from tech industry bellwethers. HP (HPQ) on May 19 said it expects sales to decline 4% to 5% in fiscal 2009, which ends in October. On the other hand, Intel (INTC) CEO Paul Otellini recently said that demand is returning to normal patterns in the current quarter, and executives at IBM (IBM) and Cisco Systems (CSCO) have said that tech demand had reached a nadir.
Dell’s results barely exceeded analysts’ earnings forecasts after discounting the cost of severance packages and facilities closures. Net income was $290 million, or 15¢ a share.Dell Inspiron 1545 battery
Excluding 9¢ in restructuring expenses, Dell earned 24¢, vs. Wall Street’s expectation of 23¢. Sales were $12.34 billion, vs. expectations of $12.66 billion. A year earlier, Dell earned 38¢ on $16.08 billion in sales.
Losing Share to HP
The pain was spread across Dell’s businesses. Desktop computer sales fell 34%, notebook sales were down 20%, and sales of corporate server computers declined 25%. Dell has been losing share in PCs to HP, now the No. 1 seller of PCs in the U.S. and worldwide. Dell also faces more vigorous competition from Taiwanese vendor Acer, which has been gaining share.
